Becoming a Successful Glassblower

By Julian Pollock

So how and where do you begin if you're thinking to become a successful glass blower? Unfortunately, since we are not all blessed with the Venetian glass making family genes, we are going to have to start from scratch, do our research, invest our time and energy plus quite a few greenbacks; then just hope and pray it works. Of course it will work - we need to think that, and anyway, art is beautiful in any form, - even when seeming mistakes are made, it is still beautiful - and that is particularly true with glassmaking.

Glassblowing Beauty Really Is in the Eye of the Beholder
It is strange but true that the signs of genuine glassblowing products made by true artisans - as opposed to mass production of cheap artifacts - are the imperfections. If every glass bowl or glass you have in your kitchen or dining room table has a mould seam in the same place, it is the sign of mass production. The Majestic Seal or stamp of the artisan is in the irregularity - imperfections to the less knowledgeable - of the markings and blemishes. It is upon the basis of these that the handblown glass of a Murano chandelier is valued and celebrated by its owner and beholder alike. Your creation too will be considered as unique, and hopefully as a masterpiece in its own right!

Begin with Borrowing from Experts
If you are someone who is genuinely interested in this craft, I would advise you to seek assistance from an expert when you first begin glass blowing. No doubt you have already done this and this is the basis of your interest. However you need to broaden your circle and interaction with more experts. You can do a local listing search to find potential glassblowers to meet first. Then is the time for you to consider becoming an apprentice beside the one you feel you'll learn best with. Visit a few and start to build a rapport, show your interest and be aware that the person you choose is someone you may spend many hours beside, being their assistant, having to do what you are told and running mundane errands. This is all really necessary so that you can watch carefully and thoroughly everything they do, step by step, until they and you are confident that you are capable of executing the procedures and techniques using proper safety methods. If you want to efficiently master this craft, it is going to take patience, skill and preparedness. You're going to need to relax into this as well, to allow your creativity to flow.

Be Prepared For Blood, Sweat and Tears
A word of caution - because of the intense heat from the flames, it is in your best interest to invest in one or two essentials, and one is to have an effective first aid kit. No one can be perfect from the beginning and you are playing with much more than matchsticks here. Of course you may prefer to follow the nonchalant attitude of the Murano glass artisans who bare their scars like badges of bravery. But seriously, things do happen no matter what precautions you take. So it is better to be safer now rather than sorry-er later. One of the most effective methods for dealing with small burns is cold water. If you don’t have running water to hand, keep a large bowl ready and full - so that you can plunge your hand, finger or burn area in immediately. The quicker you do this, no matter how small the burn, the better and faster the healing process will be. You also want to keep your work area free and clear of any debris so that you have an adequate amount of space to work with. This is also particularly true of the floor space since you never know when you may have to make sudden avoidance movements.
